Retribution will drop officially on October 21, but you can stream the full album now on NPR First Listen.
After her infamous Polaris Prize-winning album Animism comes Tanya Tagaq‘s latest work Retribution – a continual exploration of the parameters in which she marries the tradition of Inuit throat-singing to modern sounds, bringing into the light what colonization had purposely silenced from society for generations. From illuminating issues like violence against Indigenous women and the exploitation of traditional lands to spiritual grounded-ness, as always, Tagaq gives a contemporary voice to deep raw emotion, serving it all up to audiences that grower larger with every move she makes.
Retribution includes collaborative work by Jesse Zubot, drummer Jean Martin, Tuvan throat singer Radik Tyülyüsh, traditional Inuk singer Ruben Komangapik, alternative Hip Hop artist Shad, and one of Tagaq’s greatest creations, her daughter Innuja. The album also includes a cover of Nirvana‘s “Rape Me.”
