Leanne Betsamosake Simpson’s “Under Your Always Light” Video is an Ode to Decolonial Love

Anishinaabeg artist Leanne Betasamosake Simpson releases new music video for “Under Your Always Light”.

Premiering over at The FADER this morning, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson‘s new music video for her acclaimed single, “Under Your Always Light”, is a beautiful short film about powerful, feminist, decolonial love in action.

The video is a short documentary-style piece, directed by Blackfoot/Sámi filmmaker Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers, that showcases the rising talents of BC boxer Ivy Richardson (Nuxalk/Kwakwaka’wakw). Shot on location in Richardson’s home territory, Tailfeathers calls the video “a tribute to decolonial love”.

For Simpson, “Under Your Always Light” is “about escaping the ongoing violence of colonialism and into the love, beauty, strength and compassion of Indigenous spaces. It is an unapologetic celebration of the strength of Indigenous peoples, particularly women and Two Spirit/Queer people, and it places our struggle at the heart of Indigenous resistance and resurgence.”

On this day of honouring and respecting our sisters and their strength and spirit, the video couldn’t have come at a better time.
