RPM Live 002 was a big, beautiful night for two of our RPM Records artists, with Ziibiwan making his Toronto club debut opening up for Leanne Betasamosake Simpson on the release of her new album f(l)ight.
After much hype from RPM Live 001, a high demand for tickets for RPM Live 002 brought forth a second, earlier show at Toronto’s Burdock Music Hall. The twice sold-out event gathered crowds together to celebrate the latest sounds from Ziibiwan and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson‘s first album release on RPM Records for ‘f(l)ight.’
The night kicked off with RPM’s own Jarrett Martineau introducing Ziibiwan, who ushered in the night with music from Ziibi’s Time Limits EP, released back in August through RPM Records. His ambient sounds a “rift in the sonic cosmic flow, an expansive vision of cyclical temporalities and inner explorations rooted in Indigenous consciousness. Ziibiwan’s ethereal, sonic landscape opens into deeply hypnotic spaces where land, sky, and deep sea meet.”

Leanne Betasamosake Simpson serenaded the audience throughout the evening with her band, which included Cris Derksen, Nick Ferrio, and Ansley Simpson. Performing music that speaks to the history of the land, with honest and raw testimonies of the deep emotional burden in which many Indigenous women have carried throughout the generations; awareness, sovereignty, healing and moments of empowerment, her music is a pure reflection of the beautiful work Leanne is most known for.
